Research summary
Anxiety experienced by patients before an operation is common and has been reported as the worst aspect of having an operation. Despite anxiety being associated with adverse outcomes, little is understood about its causes. Addressing patient concerns may reduce anxiety.
Our survey will be administered to patients undergoing planned operations across London during three consecutive days, identifying their concerns and levels of anxiety.
We aim to encourage anaesthetists to change their practice, improve doctor-patient communication, and highlight patient-centred research goals.
We will identify those concerns which are most commonly held by patients, and associate them with state levels of anxiety preoperatively. Further, an analysis will be conducted to determine whether having a frequent number of concerns is predicted by other factors, including demographics and previous anaesthetics.
