  • Research summary

In 2017, the Medical Research Council awarded a grant as part of their Biomedical Catalyst: Development Pathway Funding Scheme to Mr John Phillips and his team at the University of East Anglia, to develop a medical device to aid diagnosis in individuals experiencing dizziness, vertigo and balance problems. This grant funded the development of the device and for it to be formally tested in healthy volunteers, and then later, in individuals who experience vertigo.

The first trial in healthy volunteers was successfully completed in early 2019. The results from the trial demonstrated that the CAVA device functioned as intended, and that the data it captured could be used to automatically identify periods of visually induced nystagmus with very high levels of accuracy. Participant compliance and device reliability were shown to be good, and the results attained provided confidence that the device is fit for purpose.

This latest study aims to assess the suitability of the CAVA device for the purpose of analysing the architecture of sleep. The CAVA device is designed to record head and eye-movements. Such signals are known to be useful for determining sleep states, and our preliminary analyses show that the data collected by the CAVA device clearly delineates sleep and wake episodes. Therefore, it is plausible that the CAVA device could be used for home-based sleep monitoring. We term this new application, sCAVA. In this study, we intend to repurpose the CAVA device by developing, testing and validating algorithms to interpret sCAVA data for sleep monitoring purposes.
