Research summary
Despite evolving treatments, a significant number of asthmatic patients have difficult to control asthma. This severe asthma is problematic for the patient and new treatments are needed. The Royal Brompton treat severe asthmatics with a 7-10day
regimen of intravenous aminophylline and hydrocortisone and anecdotal evidence suggests this reduces symptoms and increases control of exacerbations. Research is needed to understand why it is beneficial to this group of patients, attempt to improve the quality of life of severe asthmatics, with the intention of incorporating this treatment into guidelines in the future. This is a pilot study, examining symptoms, lung function, quality of life, exercise tolerance, cardiovascular function and presumed change in inflammatory profile in
severe asthmatics, pre and post treatment.REC name
