Research summary
The incidence of lung cancer in Salford is 65% higher than the national average. A community based lung health check will be introduced as part of routine clinical care. A key aspect of this service is to calculate lung cancer risk , using the validated Prostate Lung Colon Ovary (PLCO) risk calculator and individuals who are high risk will be offered low dose CT screening.
The Salford Lung Health Study (SLHS) will recruit attendees of the screening service at the Lung Health Check, with the objective of determining the impact of community-based lung screening across the city of Salford. Routine clinical data collected as part of the screening will be recorded in the study database and participants will be asked to consent to remote tracking of their long-term health outcomes through their primary and secondary care records and by accessing data from national data services such as NHS digital or Public Health England.
The primary and secondary care records will be monitored for up to 10 years afer the clinic visit. This will allow accurate evaluation of the long term effects of the Lung Health Check. AS the clinics will run over a 2 year period the study will run for a total of 12 years.
