Research summary
Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is extensively used as a second line treatment in the management of chronic urinary retention that is not associated with anatomical obstruction.
SNM acts by modulating some biological factors, the response rate is different among patients with chronic urinary retention (CUR).However, no study evaluated these factors. The aim of our study is to evaluate the predictive clinical and ultrastructural factors that are associated with a good response.
All patients with CUR who have been advised to have SNM for the management of chronic urinary retention will be recruited to the study. Clinical and urodynamic assessment will be done to all patients at baseline and between the first and second stage and also after second stage.
Four biopsies will be obtained from each patient during the second stage and will be studied using Electron microscopy at NHNN to detect the ultra structural changes in the wall of bladder in responders and non responders.
The expected duration of patient participation in the study will be 2 years.
This study will help clinician to understand the mechanism of SNM in management of CUR and to detect the predictive factors of a good responseREC name
