Research summary
This study is comprised of two separate but interrelated parts (A and B) which will run in parallel. This protocol will cover both parts of the study.
Protecting staff from infection during the Covid pandemic is critical to maintaining health services. Mistakes in using protective equipment (PPE) are the commonest avoidable factor in staff becoming infected at work. Observational studies show that risky errors in removing basic (Level 1) PPE are common. Recently, intensive care doctors have reported an increase in the spread of dangerous multi-resistant bacteria between patients, which appears likely to be transmitted between patients by Level 2 PPE worn by staff (specifically gown sleeves). Two urgent problems therefore need solution: (1) improving correct use of Level 1 PPE and (2) developing new ways to decrease cross-infection risks whilst using Level 2 PPE. In both cases Human Factors science is an appropriate approach to developing a solution. [Study relying on COPI notice]REC name
