Data collection arrangements
Within Histopathology at GOSH we have a secure Access database, held on GOSH servers, to record structured information, which is routinely collected as part of clinical care and included in the post-mortem report, for use in studies investigating mechanisms of fetal, infant and child death. (approved by an existing ethics number(04/Q0508/47), however, we now aim to gain specific approval for use as a research database for ongoing projects.
The GOSH clinical pathology system (OMNI) cannot record structured data, rather all information is recorded on paper, dictated and the final free-text flat file used as the PM report. Structured data has been extracted and entered into the Access based research database and we have begun to use this system to record information during the autopsy process.
The database is password protected, stored only on secure GOSH servers, within the password protected Histopathology area of the GOSH ICT system, with all usual NHS standards of data security, access control and backup. All data entered is generated as part of the usual clinical process of autopsy and comprises part of the clinical autopsy report provided to the patient. No additional data is collected and no identifiable data is required once the data is entered, cases being identified by unique database key only.
