Research summary
Due to the increasing demands placed on general practice and the increasing shortage of general practitioners (GPs), ‘role substitution’ is being carried out in many primary care practices. Role substitution refers to the substitution of GPs by allied health professionals such as nurses, pharmacists and physiotherapists to provide general medical services in primary care. That is, allied health professionals taking on roles that would normally be completed by GPs.
The aim of the survey is to assess the current use of role substitution in primary care in the NHS in Wales. The specific objectives are as follows:
• To determine approximately how many of the practices within each cluster are using role substitution.
• To determine whether there is a perceived workforce crisis in primary care among cluster leads in Wales.
• To assess whether cluster leads have a strategy for increasing role substitution within their cluster.
• To identify the general attitudes of cluster leads with regard to the use of role substitution in primary care.REC name
