  • Research summary

Investigations into failed implantation and early pregnancy loss suggest that immunological disorder is one of the main causes. Many studies showed that stimulation of the family of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs), which are the main component of the innate immunity, leads to production of cytokines and chemokines thus altering the endometrial milieu. Cytokines have a vital role in maintaining haemostasis during different physiological events such as embryo implantation. In contrast, cytokine imbalance during early pregnancy may lead to abnormal placentation and spontaneous abortion. Therefore, one can conclude that abnormally expressed TLRs could have direct and/or indirect effect(s) through changes which they create in the cytokine milieu.
TLR expression and function in endometria of normal fertile women will be compared with that in endometria obtained from biopsies from women with recurrent implantation failure (IF) and women having recurrent miscarriage (RM). Cases will be recruited from IVF and RM clinics at St Mary’s hospital. Samples will be collected during secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, from patients aged 25-40yrs old. Pipelle endometrial samples will be collected during hysteroscopy. The results of this study should provide further insight into the pathophysiology of IF and RM
