  • Research summary

This qualitative project is based on a single patient participation group in a North London general practice. The research will focus on the individual participants’ perspectives rather than the group as a whole. In order to achieve this aim, I will be observing a group meeting which will allow me to understand the interaction between participants and staff members and how the meeting is conducted. Recorded individual face to face interviews will also be arranged to understand their personal views and a simple quantitative questionnaire will be completed by the participants to provide me with information about the individual participants. In order to understand participants’ opinions on their role within the group, I would like to explore the different time frames related to the group, past, present and future. I will be looking at the reasons why individuals participate in these groups and how these motivations differ between members. In regards to the present, the research will be exploring the participants view on the running of the group in relation to practice, as well as the aspects of the group that the patients enjoy or find challenging. The concept of commitment in relation to the group will also be discussed to understand how long participants foresee themselves being involved with the group and how this could be maximised to prevent the group from failing. I will be carrying out the transcription myself and will be using thematic analysis to draw conclusions and ideas from the data. The research applies to practice as it could give insight on patients’ views on the groups themselves and could aid practices ability to identify roles and cater to these.
