Research summary
Research has shown associations between pain, culture, and cognition in people with vascular dementia. The current study aims to understand more about how selected variables within pain (severity, description, and expression) and cultural (individualism and intercultural communication apprehension) domains may interrelate to affect the cognitive functioning of individuals with vascular dementia.
To participate in this study, the person must have a diagnosis of vascular dementia. People from care/nursing homes and NHS clinics are encouraged to participate. Participation in this study is entirely voluntary.
This study will be conducted in the persons own care setting, in a private room. During this study, the person will be asked to answer some questions related to whether they are experiencing pain, how intense the pain is, and what the pain feels like, as well as how much they value their own needs over others, and whether they experience any anxiety when communicating with people from a different culture. They will also be asked to complete a task where numbers are connected in a sequence, a task where numbers and letters are connected in an ascending sequence, and a task which matches a given letter to a letter which was presented earlier in the task. Additionally, the persons behaviour during movement will be observed by the researcher.
This study will help us to understand more about the role of pain and cultural factors in vascular dementia and tell us more about the potential for informing the management and prognosis of vascular dementia.
