Research summary
Eczema (dermatitis) and other inflammation of the skin affects up to 20-30% of people in the UK. It carries enormous burden for patients and their families. We have found two new type of skin immune cells in our previous studies and we now wish to undertake a laboratory study to investigate whether they contribute to skin inflammation. This would help us in the development of new approaches to treatment of disease. We will study 250 adults with eczema, 250 with psoriasis and 250 control patients. This will involve repeated blood samples and on a single occasion we would take four skin samples, one of each from: normal skin, lesional skin and after two allergen skin tests. These procedures are done routinely within our department but these samples would be taken purely for research. The study is funded by the MRC. The recruitment sites would be the department of dermatology, Churchill Hospital and also in response to adverts placed within clinical areas of the hospital and in the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.
