  • Research summary

There are 1.4 million attendances to Emergency Departments in England and Wales a year following a head injury. Around 1% of these patients have life threatening brain injuries and require neurosurgery. However, around 7% of patients that undergo radiological investigation will have some form of brain injury identified. We currently cannot predict which of patients that have brain injuries identified will deteriorate and therefore all of these patients are admitted to hospital.

This study aims to identify the factors that predict deterioration in patients that have brain injuries due to trauma identified by radiological imaging. This will potentially allow high-risk patients to be identified and treated earlier and hospital admissions to be avoided for low-risk patients.

This will be accomplished through the review of around 2000 case notes of patients admitted to hospital with traumatic brain injury at 2 NHS hospital in England. Data regarding potential factors that may predict deterioration will be extracted from these case notes and mathematical modelling will be completed to identify the best combination of these factors that predict deterioration in these patients.

This study is projected to take 18 months to complete and involves no intervention or prospective data collection. Patient-identifiable information will only be accessed by members of the direct care team.
