Research summary
The aim and objectives of the study include:-
1. To assess the underlying aetiology in a group of children presenting to our paediatric out-patient clinic with a history of transient loss of consciousnesss (TLoC).
2. Given that episodes of transient loss of consciousness tend to be sudden and short-lasting, underlying life-threatening conditions can be misdiagnosed. Therefore, our objective is to develop a goal directed work-up and risk stratification approach to identify those children with an underlying sinister cause of TLoC. With the use of more directed investigations, we hope that this will avoid patients with TLoC being over-investigated or unnecessarily hospitalised.
3. To examine characteristics of associated symptoms and signs (e.g. falls) among children with transient loss of consciousness according to principal differentials. We anticipate this will help clinicians to become skilled at specific pattern recognition of various causes of transient loss of consciousness.REC name
