  • Research summary

Context: The importance of protective health behaviours in preventing infection from COVID-19 is widely recognised. Yet research has not investigated variability in engagement with protective health behaviours over time, particularly following positive or negative screening test or antibody test results. It is possible that healthcare workers who have been diagnosed/screened as having (had) COVID-19 may subsequently reduce their engagement with protective health behaviours, leaving themselves and others at greater risk of (re-)infection. The current research aims to assess whether if, after having been screened as having had COVID-19 or antibodies to COVI19, healthcare workers change their level of protective health behaviours.

Methods: We will follow front-line healthcare workers over 12 months, surveying their self-reported behaviours by online questionnaire every three months to identify COVID-19 risk perception, general interest in health (including healthy eating and exercise) and their use of COVID-19 protective health behaviours (e.g. using a mask in their personal time).

Anticipated Outcomes: It is expected that the results of this survey will show whether or not healthcare workers become more or less concerned about protective health behaviours after having been screened as having COVID-19. This will enable adjustments to recommendations for long-term protection of healthcare workers.
