Research summary
- We propose a study at the Hammersmith Hospital that will enrol adult patients under haematology with suspect diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
- MDS is a condition of dysfunction of blood cell production in the bone marrow. It usually arises in older patients. Importantly, it has been shown in the literature that copper deficiency can produce exactly the same features and yet be unsuspected. The true prevalence of copper deficiency among patients with abnormal blood cell findings is not known.
- We plan to offer patients a copper level blood test with their routine blood tests in clinic, during their routine clinic appointment. We will also ask them to complete a health questionnaire to screen for known causes of copper deficiency.
- Patients and their GPs will be informed of the results. Patients found to have low copper levels will be requested to return to clinic for a discussion about possible causes and a medical evaluation. This will not be part of the study.
- Study end: when copper levels have been collected from 20 patients.
