Research summary
Background: Our study is about a parenting programme for parents of adolescents with intellectual disability. There is limited support for parents of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. However, there is an existing programme that has been used with parents of autistic teenagers in Australia. This is called the Building Bridges Triple P (BBTP) programme. In order to meet the needs of parents of adolescents with intellectual disabilities in a UK NHS context, this programme needs to be reviewed.
Aims: (a) we will work with parents of adolescents with intellectual disabilities and professionals with experience working with these families to review and potentially adapt an existing parenting programme, and (b) complete a modelling study to try out the adapted programme and seek feedback from participants.
Method: Our study has two parts. In the first part, we will run consultation workshops with parents and professionals which will generate information about any required adaptations to the existing programme. For the second part, we will model the programme with up to eight parents in order to generate data about acceptability and any further adaptations that are required.
Patient and Public Involvement: We will ask parents and professionals to co-chair consultation workshops. Dissemination: This study will form a peer-reviewed paper which will be submitted for publication in an academic journal and will also contribute to a doctoral thesis of the chief investigator. This study may also be presented at academic conferences as an oral presentation and/or poster. All publications and presentations will need approval from the supervisory team. Participants will be asked if they wish to receive information about the project’s findings; those who say yes will be sent a newsletter containing study updates and a summary of the findings. These participants will also receive a copy of the paper via email following publication.REC name
