Research summary
People with dementia (PWD) fall more frequently and are more likely to hurt themselves than those without dementia. PWD with fall-related injuries may need more support to look after themselves or may need to move to a care home. Due to a lack of research in this area, we do not know how best to support PWD with fall-related injuries. For instance, would it be better to have a specialist team or provide extra training for existing staff looking after PWD in the community? In this study, we plan to develop and test a new approach to help PWD recover from a fall. We will start by reviewing existing literature and exploring current service provision for patients with and without dementia with fall-related injuries in Newcastle, Stockton and Norwich. We have already started to map out services and to interview professionals providing services in these locations. This application seeks approval to observe existing interventions and to interview patients and carers to explore their views on the help received, whether they needed any extra help and any suggestions for improving services. Later work - which is being submitted as a separate application - will involve identifying and following patients with dementia with a fall-related injury to document and explore their care pathways in detail. The information gathered will then be used to inform the development of a new intervention. The final stage of the study will be a pilot study to see whether it is feasible to deliver the new intervention in practice.
