Research summary
Nocturnal non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a well established treatment for a range of medical conditions in which there is nocturnal hypoventilation. A variety of upgrades to the modes of the NIV devices available have been made by manufacturers over the last few years. All of these devices are CE marked/licensed and accepted for routine clinical use. Since 2013 we have used a specific newer ventilation mode "AVAPS-AE" on the first night a patient trial's ventilation therapy. This ventilation mode is generally established, including in clinical trials, but we have used it in a different way from previous clinical teams: we have found it possible to use the data from this first night on AVAPS-AE mode to establish a patients NIV therapy requirements for long term use more accurately and quickly than previous NIV titration approaches. We have opportunistically observed significantly improved quality of care and reduced length of hospital stay at our institution with AVAPS-AE mode NIV titration, and we wish to retrospectively review all of our patient data with this, to report our experience with this. This would generate generalizable data which would help guide other centres with NIV management approaches.
