Research summary
Knee osteoarthritis is a painful degenerative condition that is both common and debilitating. It is becoming increasing common in the younger population. Knee replacements have a limited lifespan and so are limited to the older population. An opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) is a surgical option for younger patients. It realigns the knee to allow weight bearing through an unworn portion of the knee. Younger patients generally wish to maintain an active sporting lifestyle. Little evidence exists that OWHTO facilitates a return to sporting function. The aim of the study is to assess whether performing OWHTO improves a patient’s knee symptoms sufficiently to facilitate an increase in their activity levels, and to what extent. It will also asses the impact of a newer implant design on patient outcome. It will compare results to those achieved using a uni-compartmental knee replacement (a partial knee replacement used in a similar patient population to replace purely the worn part of the knee). This will be achieved via a single retrospective patient questionnaire.
