Research summary
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a public health emergency of international concern on 30th January 2020. As of 30th March 2020, there were cases in 204 countries with 693,224 confirmed cases and 33,106 deaths globally. Europe is now the most affected WHO region and the UK is seeing increasing numbers, particularly in London. \n\nThere is limited knowledge about how COVID-19 affects children, and currently no epidemiological data from the UK. Initial published studies from China show children of all ages appear to be susceptible to COVID-19, without gender difference. However, the clinical phenotype in children appears less severe than in adults and death was extremely rare.\n\nWe would like to conduct a retrospective cohort study to identify clinical features for all confirmed COVID-19 of children under 16 years old, to compare the severity of disease and need for non-invasive or invasive ventilation with adults and existing data from China. The study will be carried out at London Northwest Hospital University Healthcare NHS Trust, with patients admitted over a one-month period, from 12th March to 12th April 2020. Initally a small feasibilty study over a one month peroid with a view to a larger study over a longer period once we have the intial results. \n\nPatients will not be directly approached for the study. Once their outcome is known data will be collected from their routine clinical notes and anonymised prior to analysis.
