Research summary
Sleep breathing disorders (SBD) are sleep related breathing abnormalities that lead to disruption of the normal breathing pattern when the patient is asleep. This may affect the quality of patient’s life as the risks of cardiac arrest and stroke are increased in patients with untreated sleep apnoea. Orthognathic surgery is one treatment option for severe sleep apnoea. It moves the upper and/or lower jaw forward to enlarge the airway. This study aims to measure changes on standardised radiographs before and after the surgeries to develop ways to help surgeons assess the changes. This single centre feasibility study will be conducted at St George’s NHS Foundation Trust. Participants identified as having had orthognathic surgery and for whom the relevant data is available in the clinic notes will be included in the analysis. There will be no active participation of participants in the study.
