Research summary
Retrospective review of perinatal stroke in term and preterm infants
Stroke in adults is well recognised. However, stroke also affects up to 1 in 2300 newborn babies (“perinatal stroke”). This is the commonest cause of hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP) - weakness and stiffness on one side of the body. HCP has lifelong personal, social and financial consequences.
No standardised early therapy plan exists for perinatal stroke. The aim of this study is to document the range of current practice in diagnosis and management of perinatal stroke as well as the range of outcomes. This is an important step before considering how best to optimise management of this condition. Information on the use of healthcare resources by patients with perinatal stroke will also be collected.
Methods: Case notes of patients suffering from perinatal stroke within a 10 year period (2000-2009) will be identified from four hospitals in the Northern region with neonatal intensive care units. Data on presentation, management, healthcare resource use and outcome will be collected for term and premature infants. The information will be valuable for health care providers (awareness-raising) and parents (informed counselling). It will inform future studies aiming to improve outcomes after perinatal stroke.
