  • Research summary

Asthma is a lung condition that causes breathing problems such as cough, wheeze and shortness of breath. The condition affects 5.4 million people in the UK and costs the NHS over £1.1 billion per year. Despite a good standard of care provided for most people living with asthma, optimising disease management (particularly in people with severe or difficult-to-treat disease) remains a priority. Physical activity is a cost-effective approach that may be beneficial for asthma management; however, research to date is limited by the use of self-report and questionnaires which are both prone to both over and under-estimation. Our research group have recently conducted research to provide evidence to suggest that modern smartphone in-built pedometers offer a simple, accurate and cost-effective solution to objectively quantify physical activity in adults with asthma (manuscript under review). The current COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to evaluate physical activity and key clinical associations pre-and-post national lockdown (i.e., during periods where physical activity was likely impacted). The aim of the proposed study is therefore to conduct a longitudinal retrospective analysis of clinical records and smartphone step-count data in order to evaluate the association between physical activity and disease control in adults with severe asthma.
