  • Data collection arrangements

The respiratory research database has two components, one to facilitate recruitment into studies and one to store research data. Participants are able to consent and sign up to either the component of the database. There are separate sections for consent on the consent form and facilitated by a yes/no box.

    Recruitment Component:
The recruitment component of the database will store basic personal information that will enable nominated members of the research team to look through the database and identify participants that may be eligible for certain research studies. If a participant is potentially eligible for a study then the research team can contact them with study information. Consenting to the recruitment component of the database is purely to receive information about potentially suitable research studies. It is up to the participant if they wish to take part in a study or not.

Information stored will include basic personal information such as name, address, occupation, respiratory diagnoses/ health, brief medical history, age and sex, date of birth, medical conditions, medication, respiratory diagnoses and respiratory health and hospital s-number.

    Research component:
The research component of the database will enable participants to consent to sharing their research data and/or routinely collected clinical information with the database to be used for research purposes. Research data will be any data collected as part of that person's participation in any research study, past, present or future. Clinical information will be routinely collected information from hospital visits, outpatient visits or hospital admissions. This may include for example, blood results, respiratory clinic information, sputum results, radiology results, and information held by the NHS Information Centre. The research component of the database will only store information and data that is important and relevant to our research.

  • Research programme

The recruitment component of the database will support research study recruitment. Nominated members of the research team will access the recruitment database to look for participants that are potentially eligible for research studies, and contact potentially eligible participants on behalf of the researcher. Data in the research component of the database will support generic respiratory research led by academics, researchers and investigators in the UHL Trust, NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre and Institute of Lung Health, University of Leicester. The data will also support research from external researchers both academic and industry, within and outside of the UK. Permission from the BRC Respiratory Theme will be sought from such researchers prior to accessing the data. Only non-identifiable data will be available to researchers.
