  • Research summary

This study is associated with the Minder Integrated Health Management Study (IRAS 257561) which utilises assistive technologies to support those living with dementia. RESILIENT is a pilot study that forms part of a successful EPSRC grant call for transforming healthcare and enabling independence at home.

The study aims to explore the feasibility of collecting data from in-home devices to inform the creation of machine learning models. These models will explore whether health deterioration can be predicted in elderly individuals, living with multi-morbidities, at risk of developing dementia. Furthermore, we will work in collaboration with local care teams to create clinically meaningful health reports that can support participant care.

Participants and their carers/study partners will be provided three passive devices: a smart watch, smart body weight scales and a sleep matt. They will complete 3-monthly questionnaires which are used in standard clinical care to assess mental and physical wellbeing. Participants will have access to their own health data. The RESILIENT research team will create weekly well-being reports from the data collected to pass on to the participant's and their community hub care team for review. Any suspected deterioration in cognition or mental health will be highlighted within the report and clinical advice will be given by their community hub care team; clinical advice and management of the long-term condition will remain with the community hub care team.

There will also be an exploration of the acceptability, the needs and the perceptions of in-home monitoring conducted via an online questionnaire. This questionnaire will be circulated among clinicians and individuals affected by chronic health conditions (either directly or indirectly).
