  • Research summary

This study is associated with the Minder Integrated Health Management Study (IRAS 257561) which utilises assistive technologies to support those living with dementia. PROTECT aims to further refine and optimise the system offered to explore ways to support people living with long-term health conditions at risk of dementia. Transforming the care and management of multi-morbidities towards an individualised, evidence-based approach could delay the risk of conversion to dementia, promoting earlier intervention and alleviating strain on the healthcare systems.

Participants and their carers/study partners will be provided three passive devices: a smart watch, smart body weight scales and a sleep matt. They will complete 3-monthly questionnaires which are used in standard clinical care to assess mental and physical wellbeing. Participants will be encouraged to proactively monitor their own health data, whilst a team of 'Monitors' will create weekly well-being reports from the data collected to pass on to the participants and their community hub care team for review. Any suspected deterioration in cognition or mental health will be highlighted within the report and clinical advice will be given by their community hub care team; clinical advice and management of the long-term condition will remain with the community hub care team.

The study aims to identify a sustainable and cost-effective system to assist with the management of these long-term conditions. Our objective is to investigate whether the system can help identify early deterioration, suggestive of dementia, thus facilitating early intervention.

There will also be an exploration of the acceptability, the needs and the perceptions of in-home monitoring conducted via an online questionnaire. This questionnaire will be circulated among clinicians and individuals affected by chronic health conditions (either directly or indirectly).
