Research summary
With newly available and emerging reproductive techniques, mitochondrial patients now have even more reproductive options than ever before to consider. There is currently no published research exploring how mitochondrial patients make these reproductive decisions, comparing the past and present decision making, how strongly patients feel for or against their current and possible available options and how patients would like this complex information presented to them. We propose to undertake interviews with women with mitochondrial disease to explore what is important to them.
Insight in to the feelings of the targeted population will allow clinicians specialising in their care to improve upon current genetic counselling practices and could provide data on the potential uptake of techniques in the future.
