Research summary
The study aims to examine the lived experiences of renal patients and the support they receive from specialist adult renal social work services in North Wales.
Living with long term health conditions such as renal failure can cause marked changes in lifestyle, deterioration in quality of life and generally poor outcomes. Renal social work has been shown to decrease patient distress (Seekles et al, 2020).
Although renal social work is part of the wider renal multi-disciplinary team (MDT), very little research has been done into what patients value from specialised social work support and the impact on their care needs.
The objectives of this study are fivefold:
• To identify the care needs of kidney patients through their own experiences
• Establish what kidney patients value from social work support
• To understand if the social work support for kidney patients in North Wales, meets their needs within the current system
• To identify what aspects of social care may be delivered by other members of the renal team
• Increase the evidence base for renal social work and better understand the social needs of kidney patients to improve practice social support provisionREC name
