Research summary
It is a known fact that uncontrolled high blood pressure adversely impacts kidney function and hastens the onset of dialysis in patients who have existing impaired kidney function. A new technique in controlling blood pressure is “renal denervation“. This involves angiographic insertion of a special catheter device into the arteries supplying each kidney to ablate (burn) the nerves around the arteries which are responsible for high blood pressure. The study aims to evaluate this new technique’s ability to reduce blood pressure and thus delay the onset of dialysis in patients with underlying chronic kidney disease whose high blood pressure is uncontrolled by medication.
