Research summary
This is a feasibility study to assess whether it is safe to measure VO2 max, an indicator for fitness, remotely using a Fitbit and the Rockport Walk Test. Patients who are under the Oesophagogastric Unit at Imperial College Healthcare Trust are already having their prehabilitation assessed and monitored using an app called Onko. We would like to assess the aforementioned test and check the feasibility of measuring VO2 max remotely. The study involves an interview with the patients who are deemed fit for surgery, asking the patients to walk a 1 mile distance on a flat service as fast as possible and then measuring their the time to complete 1 mile and their heart rate at 1 mile followed by another interview after assessing the logistical issues around the test. A minimum of 10 patients is required to perform this test.
