Research summary
During Covid-19 pandemic, restrictions have presented a challenge not only for recruitment of the necessary numbers of volunteers but also to maintain the highest safety levels. The Labskin models ability to home skin microbiota, our progress in preserving the whole microbiome, our transport technology and a new IT system developed by our team will allow us to recruit volunteers on-line and isolate their microbiomes remotely. The IT system will inform, track and trace the volunteers while the volunteers perform swab isolation in the safety of their homes. To achieve that, this protocol covers remote collection of the skin microbiome from healthy volunteers. All samples will be subject to 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing then transplanted to a full thickness skin model for further testing at Labskin. If the study is successful, our intention is to carry out this procedure on a permanent basis. We also intend to recruit diseased microbiomes such as from people with acne or atopic dermatitis for future studies.
