Research summary
Hip and knee replacements are common orthopaedic operations performed in the NHS costing many millions of pounds per year. Exercise is known to be beneficial for managing symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) and a smartphone app may help people adhere to an active lifestyle. the aim of this study is to find out if the relationship between physical activity and pain can be charcterised objectively using a smart phone Twenty participants will be asked to use a smartphone app which will record their physical activity and they will score their pain on a smart watch during one week before they have injections of corticosteroids into their knee joint(s) as part of their treatment and for one week after. They will wear the smartphone close to the hip over the two week period, and wear the smartwatch to score there joint pain three times a day and also whenever they feel OA related pain. These two phases will be compared and the relationship between pain and physical activity will be documented.
