  • Data collection arrangements

Participants will be approached at their routine clinic appointment by the clinical care team and consent gained for enrolment. Participants who have also attended the clinic in the last 5 years will be contacted by letter to consent for enrolment in the database.

The database collects information that is part of the routine assessment and treatment of the patient with fibroids in addition to a number of questionnaires. Data stored will include information regarding participant medical history, imaging and blood test results, procedure or operation undertaken and clinic consultations and inputted into an pseudo-anonymised database by members of the approved research team.

Data stored includes age; pregnancies and their outcomes; medical problems; surgical history and treatments previously used for fibroid symptoms. Data will also be collected from three completed questionnaires about participant symptoms. Data will be collected following treatment regarding recovery and whether any side effects or complications were experienced. Additional long-term data collected that would not be part of routine assessment will be collected annually to see if additional treatment for fibroids was required; whether menopausal and regarding any pregnancies and the respective outcomes. Additionally data from 3 questionnaires regarding symptoms would be collected each year for 5 years.

  • Research programme

The database is being set up to collect information on patients who are experiencing symptoms relating to uterine fibroids and who are undergoing treatment at St Mary's Hospital. It is anticipated that information gained will help the wider community of women with uterine fibroids.
