  • Research summary

There is little research published about the experience, impact and meaning of having a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), although there are some studies that have looked at the experiences of stroke. This gap in knowledge may be addressed by identifying patients’ perceived needs following TIA and adding to the evidence base upon which service provision could be built.\n\nThe overall research question is ‘What are patients’ needs following TIA?’ The research project developed to answer the question has been broken down into separate phases. Previously patients have been interviewed to identify their\nperceived needs following TIA. As part of the interview process patients were asked to consider needs previously identified in the Stroke Survivor Needs Survey (French et al. 2008). The interviews have identified a range of needs\nand issues which related to the individuals concerned. Further interviews with professionals and focus groups with patients have enabled a model of needs following TIA to be constructed.\n\nThe current phase of the research aims to build on the provisional model developed. This will be done by creating an ’expert panel’ comprising patients supporters and healthcare professionals to review the model and help to refine and validate it.\n\nParticipants will be recruited from the TIA clinic at Poole Hospital NHS Trust. Patients given a diagnosis of TIA between 1st May 2014 and 31st October 2014 will be given or sent a written invitation to participate. The invitation may be given to them in clinic or posted to their home address.\n\nPatients will be encouraged to bring a ’supporter’ with them to the group.\nThe focus group will be conducted at Poole Hospital NHS Trust and will consist of up to 10 participants. The group will last no more than 3 hours in total.\nRefreshments will be provided.
