Research summary
During the COVID19 pandemic, a new team of around 70 staff was established to provide a service to support dying patients and their families. Members of the team were healthcare professionals redeployed from other clinical areas (for example, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, outpatients). They worked across five hospitals and 40 care homes across the Northern Care Alliance, Manchester. They did not have previous experience of caring for people at the end of life. We are interested in finding out about their experiences during this time, describe the kind of work that they carried out, and explore how well prepared and supported they were for this role. This research will hopefully help us to prepare better for any future situations where we need to quickly expand end of life care services. The project will last six months and we will carry out three focus groups of 1.5 hours each, in which the Cygnets will be supported to discuss their experiences. Focus groups will be guided by a flexible set of questions. Each group will have a maximum of 10 participants.
