Research summary
The study will involve interviews and observations in five selected Critical Care units in England. All these units have advanced Clinical Information Systems that are extensively used in the immediate care of patients. Their use of the data in these Clinical Information Systems for care quality improvement beyond the immediate clinical episode, however, is quite variable.
In the first phase we will look at how these units are currently extracting data from their Clinical Information Systems to improve quality of patient care. We will also identify data held in their Clinical Information Systems that clinical staff believe could contribute to care quality improvement, but that they currently do not extract. The reasons why these data are not extracted will be investigated.
In the second phase we will develop data analytical tools to enable clinical staff to more easily extract data from their Clinical Information Systems.
In the third phase we will look at how well clinical staff are able to use these tools to extract data from their Clinical Information Systems.
In the fourth phase we will look at the effects of this repurposing of data on care quality in the units.
The study will use both qualitative and quantitative methods.REC name
