  • Research summary

The current project will explore how listening to designed functional music for sleep, known to resemble brain activity in the sleep states, helps with insomnia treatment in people with major depressive disorder.
Acute sleep disorders propagate depression, and these bi-directional interactions are hindering depression treatment progress (Abad & Guilleminault, 2005; Walker et al., 2019).

Our study will examine how tolerable music listening as an adjuvant intervention is, how many sessions are enough, and what happens in participants’ brains after music intervention. We will compare this to their potential corresponding depression symptoms relief, changes in sleep quality and their social resilience. We will use a brain imaging technique called electroencephalography (EEG).

During the patient's enrolment, they will receive instructions on sleep hygiene and a first listening demonstration on how to self-administer music for sleep before bedtime for 14 consecutive days.

For the current project, we will invite 12 participants to take part in this exploratory EEG study. After the study, participants will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview for this study.

If they choose to take part in this study, participants will be asked to attend a 5-minute EEG recording session before and after the study is finished.
Using behavioural questionnaires, we will collect some information from the participants before and after the EEG.
