  • Research summary

The European and UK guidelines for the management of bone sarcoma make no recommendations on rehabilitation. There is currently no consensus on the rehabilitation of paediatric patients following surgery for primary bone sarcoma. The evidence shows returns to functional activities are impaired and there is variation in survivorship. Participation in physical activity and ADLs are important for preventing or mitigating adverse late effects of childhood cancer, including cardiovascular disease and obesity and are essential for living independently and having a good quality of life.To create a consensus of the rehabilitation we must first determine the realistic functional outcomes following surgery.

The study aims to understand functional expectations following an endoprosthetic replacement due to bone cancer. We are interested in the viewpoints of four groups of people:
    • Children and adolescents who have experienced endoprosthetic replacement (aged older than 10 and below 18 at the time of surgery)
    • Parents or carers of children and adolescents who have experienced endoprosthetic replacement
    • Orthopaedic surgeons performing the surgery
    • Implant manufacturers

Patients and parents/carers will be identified from clinic lists and interviewed on the same day as their clinic appointment. Patients recruited will have had a diagnosis of primary bone sarcoma and surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, they will have been under the age of 18 years when they had their surgery and a minimum of one year post-operation.

Each participant will carry out one interview with the lead investigator and research assistant (at the same time) about their expectations of functional outcomes following surgery e.g. participation in sport and activities of daily life.
