  • Research summary

Following long periods of low investment, reorganisation and wider financial constraints, Health Visiting (HV) has recently undergone a rapid workforce expansion of 40% (DOH, 2011). Consequently, additional pressures have been placed on supervisors (preceptors) to support the newly qualified HV's, whilst also responding to new initiatives including a new universal and targeted Health visiting service (DH 2009).

Transitional stress in newly qualified professionals (preceptees) is recognised in the literature, and reported to be a 'critical' point for resilience building (Hunter and Warren 2014). A crucial factor is the preceptorship relationship (Whitehead et al 2013) and the need for preceptors to be knowledgeable about the preceptorship process (Morley, 2007). However, the support needs of preceptors is under-investigated (Maringer and Jensen 2014), despite recognition of role fatigue and preceptor burnout (Blozen, 2010).

This participatory study will evaluate what supports role resilience in preceptorship. A co-inquiry approach will illicit the counter-narratives of both preceptees and preceptors in Health Visiting practice. Through a process of co-inquiry, these professional Health visitors will research alongside the Principle investigator, referred to hereafter as the initiating researcher will co-construct a Preceptorship Resilience Framework (PRF) using realist evaluation (Pawson and Tilley 2004). The inclusion of a mixed professional steering group will consider the transferablity of the PRF to other professional groups and supervisory relationships.
