  • Research summary

Research question\n\nWhat are the active components of a home treatment crisis resolution service and important context for the prevention of hospital admission in dementia crisis?\n\nBackground\n\nPeople with dementia in crisis can receive home treatment. The essential components of home treatment for preventing hospital admission during dementia crisis are not known. \n\nA dementia crisis is when a person with dementia presents to a health of public service in a state where they, or a family member, is at risk of serious harm or death. \n\nAims\n\nTo identify and understand critical factors in successful home treatment of a dementia crisis and use this knowledge to improve the practices of a home treatment crisis resolution service in Wales.. \n\nA secondary aim is to develop a manual for home treatment in dementia crisis that can be tested for use across the UK. \n\nMethods \n\nThe research will be of mixed-methods case study design. It will investigate what happens before dementia crisis and how dementia crisis is managed to resolution or outcome at six weeks. It will compare two cases, management in the community by a home treatment mental health crisis resolution team and management by an in-patient mental health service. \n\nData will be collected in the following ways: medical record review, observations of the management of dementia crisis (total 60, 30 per case), interviews with patients and carers post crisis (total 30, 15 per case), Perceived Stress Scale completed at first assessment and interview, QOL-AD measure of quality of life at interview, interviews with healthcare professionals (max 30, 10-15 per case), and focus groups with healthcare professionals (1 per case).\n\nThe analysis will reveal key treatments, behaviours, education and context important for home treatment to prevent hospital admission. It will also reveal the potential for home treatment to reduce current admission rates. \n
