Research summary
This study aims to improve the clinical relevance of current policy and guidance about working with people with long-term conditions. The purpose of this study is to develop better ways of thinking about how health and social care staff help people manage and live well with long-term conditions. The study will also produce materials that can guide practice development and training.
The first stage of the project involves:
(a) a review of studies of patients’ experiences of managing long term conditions (including interacting with health professionals)
(b) A review of studies of health professionals’ perspectives and practices relating to collaborative approaches to care and supporting patients to self-manage their conditions; and
(c) interviews with health and social care professionals about their experiences of working with people with diabetes or Parkinson’s.
Insights from these will be used to draft first versions of our conceptual analysis, conceptual model and illustrative vignettes.
In the second stage of the project, we will test and refine the drafts of our conceptual analysis, conceptual model and illustrative vignettes in two series of group discussions, first with health and social care professionals who work with people with diabetes and Parkinson’s, and then with broader groups of health professionals, patient advocates, professional educators and quality improvement specialists.
