Research summary
One in 44 young people (YP) have a visible difference ('disfigurement') and dermatological disease contributes significantly to this number in terms of aetiology. ‘Looking different’ can have a profound effect. One third experience difficulties which impacts social competence, health and academic performance. Research shows YP need self-management skills as an alternative/addition to medical/surgical solutions. Unfortunately evidence-based psychosocial interventions are scarce. YP Face IT offers an accessible intervention that can be completed at home with minimal health professional supervision, and aims to reduce appearance-related distress. It has the potential to be a cost effective tool, reducing demand on limited ‘face-to-face’ psychological and surgical/medical services.
