  • Research summary

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It is estimated that, among hospital admissions with COVID-19, approximately 30% may require critical care. The pandemic therefore has the potential to overwhelm healthcare resources, and exceed critical care bed capacity many times over, even with implementation of population-level interventions to interrupt transmission. Rapid and effective triage at the point of hospital admission is therefore required to ensure that patients at higher risk of deterioration are managed and monitored appropriately. This mechanism becomes increasingly important as hospital resources become more stretched. In this study, we propose to use routinely collected electronic health record data to develop and validation a prognostic model to predict risk of respiratory deterioration leading to requirement of ventilatory support, death or initiation of end of life care. The model will be designed to be implemented at the point of hospital admission in order to rapidly ’triage’ patients. [Study relying on COPI notice]
