  The aim of the study is to determine whether a modified cannula is more easier to insert into a vein than a standard cannula. The modification proposed is to slightly curve the bcannula within the protective sheath prior to insertion. This enables the cannula to be inserted with the tip at a less acute angle to the vein so that there is less risk of puncturing the rear wall of the vein.

  Study participants will be elective surgical pateints. Trainee anaesthetists will receive training in how to bend the cannula. Patients will be randomly allocated to either receive the modified or curved cannula.

  Number of attempts required for successful cannulation will be recorded together with any of the recgnised complications of venepuncture.
