Research summary
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest risks to global health, with a predicted 50 million deaths annually by 2050. It is estimated that a third of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary. The World Health Organization has reported the association between dental and oral -maxillofacial infections and resistance to antibiotics. Considering dentists account for 10% of all prescriptions in the UK, it is now clearly important to determine the type of clinical pathogens and AMR rates within head and neck infections. The study involves retrospective analysis of the AMR rates of significant head and neck pathogens (bacteria) isolated by the Clinical Oral Microbiology diagnostic service based at the University Dental Hospital, Cardiff between 2012-2024. All samples were destroyed following clinical reporting, and no prospective sampling will be conducted. No funding is required for this retrospective study as the dataset is already compiled within CVUHB. In this study we aim to provide an outline of resistance patterns over the last decade within the largest serving secondary care dental setting in Wales. The value of this unanalysed dataset could inform future clinical practice for sampling head and neck infections and is the first dataset of its kind to be compiled in Wales. The results obtained here could help drive intervention to reduce global AMR rates, which may be adopted on a national level. This dataset could assist standardised recording of samples across centres in the UK for optimum AMR surveillance.
