Data collection arrangements
Cough is a common symptom for which medical attention is sought. Currently there is no accurate measure of cough frequency or intensity available (i.e. a device to measure the number of times per hour coughing occurs and how much effort is expended per cough). We have been collaborating with Vitalograph Ltd who have designed and manufactured a digital recording device (Vitalojak™) specifically to meet the requirements of 24hr cough sound recordings. This device is CE marked and registered with the FDA (510K).
The purpose of this proposal is to develop a database (RaDAR) of anonymised acoustic recordings to facilitate the further development and testing of software algorithms for the analysis and reporting of cough parameters. The cough research team has completed a number of studies in recent years including acoustic recordings which would be of value to include into this research database. It is proposed that collections of data from studies commencing from 2009 onwards, those currently being collected as part of ongoing studies, and all future cough research studies will be incorporated into RaDAR.
Data from this database will be available for sharing with external researchers and also with commercial collaborators.
Research programme
The primary objective of RaDAR is to facilitate research of the highest quality into cough detection and acoustics to ultimately improve the assessment of cough and cough treatments and, therefore, benefit patients. It is anticipated that most applications for access to data will come from the contributory members; these will primarily constitute the cough research team and also Vitalograph Ltd (who have developed and provide the recording equipment, VitaloJAK™). RaDAR will also accept applications for access to data from non-contributory members, such as researchers from other hospitals, universities and commercial organisations. In order to allow the data contributors time to make use of newly adopted data, an exclusivity period of 3 years will be applied before other non-contributing data users may have access to RaDAR data.
