Research summary
The aim of this project is to find out how easy it is to look at a patient and recognise that they are very unwell and need extra support from the doctors.
At the moment, very sick patients are recognised by taking measurements from them. These measurements include looking at how fast their heart is beating, how fast they are breathing, and if they have a high temperature etc. We give them a score based on these measurements (the NEWS score). If their score is high, a special team of doctors and nurses will come to look at the patient and decide if they need extra help.
We believe that an important part of deciding how sick a person is is by looking at them. We believe that we should be able to add a measurement of a person's facial expression to the NEWS score that will help doctors recognise very sick patients faster.
We have designed 3 pictures of different facial expressions that suggest to us that a person is very sick and need extra help from the doctors. We have attached a score to each of these pictures that can be added to the NEWS score.
We would like to go to see the unwell patients with the special team of doctors and nurses when they go to look at them on the ward. We would like to then take a look at the patient's face and score their facial expression based on the pictures we have. Two medical professionals will score the person's facial expression at the bedside. The person will be looked at and treated by the team of doctors and nurses at the same time.
We will collect the scores from many different patients and look to see if the patients needing extra help had higher scores.
