Research summary
We are developing a new objective outcome measure to assess in-hospital recovery after cardiac surgery. We will combine data on post-operative complications and vital signs as a way of assessing patient recovery. We will administer a questionnaire to determine which complications have the greatest impact on recovery from the patient and clinician perspective. The results of the questionnaire will be used to inform the development of the new outcome.
Cardiac surgeons and past patients who recently underwent cardiac surgery will be invited to participate in the questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask participants to rate the impact of a range of possible complications on recovery. These responses will be used to create a final 'ranked' order of complications (from 'biggest impact' to 'smallest impact' on recovery) from the perspective of cardiac surgeons and cardiac surgery patients.
