Research summary
Epilepsy is common (lifetime prevalence of 2-5%) and associated with potential risks to health, safety and autonomy. Although formal risk assessments for those with epilepsy are recommended, we lack evidence-based standardised measures to do this. We have therefore developed an epilepsy risk awareness checklist (ERAC) tool, which incorporates personal safety, health care and quality of life.
The current ERAC tool provides useful assessment data for clinicians working with individuals with epilepsy and their carers in relation to risk. However, it does not quantify the risk or provide any measure of the degree of relative risk to patients.
Therefore this study aims to:
*Quantify the ERAC tool into a numerical score.
*Assess the feasibility of the ERAC score as a predictive measure. The ERAC has the potential to be an effective evaluation tool that could help to improve the safety and quality of life for people with epilepsy.
